Merapi Eruption

Merapi, which is the most active volcano in Indonesia, started releasing hot clouds around 17.02 WIB.

Head of the Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation, Surono, told the BBC that the first eruption occurred at 1702 WIB for nine minutes.

Then, he said, followed by several eruptions, including up to half an hour. "At 17:18 there was an eruption for four minutes, then a series of eruptions, including at 1742, a long eruption of up to 33 minutes, followed by an eruption at 1816 minutes and finally 1821 for 33 minutes," said Surono.

Surono added that it is still difficult to predict what will happen. "The tremors are still ongoing until now, so we cannot conclude anything with this condition whether the eruption will continue or has stopped," he said.

According to Surono, the emergence of these hot clouds is a sign of the eruption of Mount Merapi.

AP news agency journalists reported that about 20 people who suffered burns due to the hot volcanic dust emanating from Mount Merapi were treated by a team of doctors.

Until around 1900 WIB, Merapi was still emitting noises and hot smoke.

A local farmer, Sukamto, told the AP "there was a thundering sound like a long storm, maybe about 15 minutes."

"Then, thick hot plumes of smoke were shot into the air from inside Mount Merapi," added Sukamto.

Local residents also said they smelled a strong smell of sulfur since around 17 WIB.

Volcanologists warn that the growing pressure beneath Merapi's lava dome could cause one of the biggest eruptions in recent years.

The current status of Mount Merapi is Awas status, the highest level in the eruption phase.

Hartono, from the main post in Sleman, Pakem told BBC Indonesia that about 96 percent of the residents had fled, but some were trapped.

'' [They] we are looking for. what is clear is that a family of 7 people is trapped in his house. Ash rains about 15 to 20 kilometers from the summit of Merapi. Some people in Kepuh Harjo were burnt due to hot clouds, '' he said.
